Why there is no universal pet-years formula
A universal seven-to-one rule does not represent early development or differences between species. Dogs mature quickly and later ageing differs by breed and size. Cats also mature rapidly in the first two years, then the common comparison adds about four human years per cat year.
Veterinary guidance is organised around life stages and the individual animal. The AAHA canine guidelines consider size, breed, lifestyle, health and age. The AAHA and AAFP feline guidelines define kitten, young adult, mature adult and senior stages while recognising individual variation.
Calendar age and human-age estimates answer different questions

What if my pet's date of birth is unknown?
Use the best estimate provided by a veterinarian or rescue, and mark it clearly as approximate. If only a month or year is known, choose a consistent date for record keeping without presenting it as documented fact. You can also track adoption day separately with the pet birthday reminder guide.
