A half birthday is six calendar months after your birthday

The common calendar method keeps the day number and moves forward six months. A birthday on 15 March has a half birthday on 15 September. The calculator finds the next occurrence from today and includes a countdown.

Calendar months are the clearest convention.Adding six months is not always the same as adding 182 or 183 days because months and years have different lengths.

How the half birthday calculation works

  1. Keep the original day of the month.
  2. Move the birth month forward by six calendar months.
  3. Use the last valid day when the target month is shorter.
  4. Choose the next occurrence that is today or later.

This is the same calendar-month idea used by the Life Dates milestone timeline. For broader round-day dates, use the life milestone calculator. The full date rules are recorded in the calculation methodology.

What happens for 29th, 30th or 31st birthdays?

BirthdayCalendar half birthdayReason
29 February29 AugustAugust contains the same day number
31 August28 February, or 29 February in a leap yearFebruary has no 31st, so the date uses its last day
31 March30 SeptemberSeptember has no 31st

There is no single legal or official half birthday convention. If a school, organisation or promotion uses the phrase, follow its stated rule.

Why mark a half birthday?

A half birthday can be useful when a child's birthday falls during a school holiday, when friends live far apart, or when you simply want a small reason to celebrate between annual birthdays. Keep it light: a favourite meal, a walk, a call or a tiny note can make the date feel noticed without turning it into another major obligation.

Half birthday questions

Is a half birthday exactly 182 days later?

Not under the calendar method used here. Six calendar months may span different numbers of days depending on the months and whether a leap day occurs.

Can pets have half birthdays?

Yes. Life Dates includes half birthdays in supported pet milestone timelines as well as people profiles.

Does the calculator upload my date of birth?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and the page does not send the entered date to Life Dates.
